Reflection of 3rd lesson

Mathematics is Silaturahim
Monday , March 4th 2013 was the forth meeting with Mr. Marsigit in English course. As usual the class began at 9.00 o’clock. Firstly we were praise to God by praying. Then Mr. Marsigit gave us vocabulary test, in order to measure how far our english knowledge is, especially the vocabulary improvement since we had met at first time.  Afterthat Mr. Marsigit asked all of us to collect our reflection of last meeting and gave it back to us. He wanted us to make some question about math, english, or anything which was writen in the back page of our last meeting reflection.  After we submitted back to him, he tried to answer such question from us.
Next session was answering question. Mr. Marsigit started to answer our question. The luckiest one was Alissa’s. The question, how as a student we must studying english in mathematics? According to Mr. Marsigit’s experiences and theory also in his explanation last Saturday, March 2nd in national seminar in Mathematics Competition Olympiad and Seminar. He said that there was a need for us to learn everything around us giving by the God. So he perceived something should be naturally learned, not to force. He thought problem was how the curriculum more humanize. So student could learn easily.
Mr. Marsigit also stated that the best way to learn english is to translate and to be translated, to reflect and to be reflected. That’s why he always fasilitated us in order that we were able to translate and we were able to reflect  our experience. Eventhough it was just small experience. Everything in the great therminology, called hermainitic.
Mr. Marsigit tried to identify  Indonesian term for a long time, and found the nearest meaning of hermainitic was silaturahim. He said that you silaturahim to everything,  about english, television, knowledge, encyclopedia, dictionary, native speaker, tourist, that fluency in speaking english, and also silaturahim in web blog. “Not only in trying to learn english but also to learn everything, math, physic, language, sociology, please you develope silaturahim” said Mr. Marsigit. Indeed, if we wanted to learn and understood society phenomena, we did silaturahim. Besides java tradition in developing silaturahim in moeslim great holid.
Go on the next question from Dian Permatasari, how to implement character education in teaching and learning process in the class? Based on Mr. Marsigit’s explanation, to implement character education in the class, we should understand  about the aspect of teaching learning math. One of teaching learning math was innovative approach. It combined various media to learn math, besides just hearing teacher then solving some problem.  Usually innovative approach using multimedia during learning process, like audio, video, gadget, web blog, and so on. This condition made us to learn math easily, because there were many activities. Such as writing, listening, talking, reading, etc, in order to make a reflection.
There were so many definitions of math, started from Aristoleles to house servant had their own idea about mathematics. Theoritically, the number of math is the same number of people that thinking of mathematics. Mr. Marsigit divided into two groups, formal mathematics or axiomatic and school mathematics or realistic.
As an innovative teacher we must realize that there were many mathematics. Not only one. For the Gods mathematics is beautiful. In the contrast elementary student thought that mathematics was very scary like ghost, extremely they thought that mathematics was hell. This traumatic feeling of mathematics was a big problem for elementary student. Mr. Marsigit said that we tried to dig up, to uncover, supporting by refference, to write, and to reflect everything.
The next question was Rydlo’s, why innovative approach is better than traditional one?  “It’s up to you,  every people has their own answer”, said Mr. Marsigit. Based on his theory last meeting, of course, he prefer innovative approach to traditional one.
Then countinued by Putri’s question, will there a game in this course? Mr. Marsigit answered that  next week would watch a video.
Next, Faqih’s question, why you ask the student to make reflection? According to Mr. Marsigit explaination about his reason. The best method was reflect. It was the highest order to thinking, because it’s very complete and complicated. He said that the reflection was belong to us, if you are sincere itself will increase of your english.
How to get meaningful learning was Wildanul’s question. Mr. Marsigit elaborated that to get meaningful learning, we did silaturahim, to traslate and to be translated, to reflect and to be reflected.
Then, go on to Dian puspita’s question, how to teach effectively?  Mr. Marsigit like how the student learn effectively, rather than to teach effectively.  “You to reflect, you need to act, you need to have  more and more reflection”,  said him. Mathematical translation was mite. The real one was how to facilitate in order to learn to reflect, and gave the student a chance.
Next was Marissa’s question, what is the main idea of the school mathematic? Based on Mr. Marsigit explanation, for the youngest student, the children, knowledge was activity. The definition of mathematics is activity. It consisted of four, activity to looking for the pattern, activity to solve problem, activity to investigate, and activity to communication. Smart people were polite, able to adjust within situsasi any great mathematician if talking to a child elementary’s mathematics would define as activity.
The last question was Shella’s, how to change the thinking of student if mathematic is difficult subject? Polite and courteous was a science, giving better facilities, miles accompanied it, will eventually have a positive effect if we were able to lead out well.
