Reflection of 3rd lesson

Mathematics is Silaturahim
Monday , March 4th 2013 was the forth meeting with Mr. Marsigit in English course. As usual the class began at 9.00 o’clock. Firstly we were praise to God by praying. Then Mr. Marsigit gave us vocabulary test, in order to measure how far our english knowledge is, especially the vocabulary improvement since we had met at first time.  Afterthat Mr. Marsigit asked all of us to collect our reflection of last meeting and gave it back to us. He wanted us to make some question about math, english, or anything which was writen in the back page of our last meeting reflection.  After we submitted back to him, he tried to answer such question from us.
Next session was answering question. Mr. Marsigit started to answer our question. The luckiest one was Alissa’s. The question, how as a student we must studying english in mathematics? According to Mr. Marsigit’s experiences and theory also in his explanation last Saturday, March 2nd in national seminar in Mathematics Competition Olympiad and Seminar. He said that there was a need for us to learn everything around us giving by the God. So he perceived something should be naturally learned, not to force. He thought problem was how the curriculum more humanize. So student could learn easily.
Mr. Marsigit also stated that the best way to learn english is to translate and to be translated, to reflect and to be reflected. That’s why he always fasilitated us in order that we were able to translate and we were able to reflect  our experience. Eventhough it was just small experience. Everything in the great therminology, called hermainitic.
Mr. Marsigit tried to identify  Indonesian term for a long time, and found the nearest meaning of hermainitic was silaturahim. He said that you silaturahim to everything,  about english, television, knowledge, encyclopedia, dictionary, native speaker, tourist, that fluency in speaking english, and also silaturahim in web blog. “Not only in trying to learn english but also to learn everything, math, physic, language, sociology, please you develope silaturahim” said Mr. Marsigit. Indeed, if we wanted to learn and understood society phenomena, we did silaturahim. Besides java tradition in developing silaturahim in moeslim great holid.
Go on the next question from Dian Permatasari, how to implement character education in teaching and learning process in the class? Based on Mr. Marsigit’s explanation, to implement character education in the class, we should understand  about the aspect of teaching learning math. One of teaching learning math was innovative approach. It combined various media to learn math, besides just hearing teacher then solving some problem.  Usually innovative approach using multimedia during learning process, like audio, video, gadget, web blog, and so on. This condition made us to learn math easily, because there were many activities. Such as writing, listening, talking, reading, etc, in order to make a reflection.
There were so many definitions of math, started from Aristoleles to house servant had their own idea about mathematics. Theoritically, the number of math is the same number of people that thinking of mathematics. Mr. Marsigit divided into two groups, formal mathematics or axiomatic and school mathematics or realistic.
As an innovative teacher we must realize that there were many mathematics. Not only one. For the Gods mathematics is beautiful. In the contrast elementary student thought that mathematics was very scary like ghost, extremely they thought that mathematics was hell. This traumatic feeling of mathematics was a big problem for elementary student. Mr. Marsigit said that we tried to dig up, to uncover, supporting by refference, to write, and to reflect everything.
The next question was Rydlo’s, why innovative approach is better than traditional one?  “It’s up to you,  every people has their own answer”, said Mr. Marsigit. Based on his theory last meeting, of course, he prefer innovative approach to traditional one.
Then countinued by Putri’s question, will there a game in this course? Mr. Marsigit answered that  next week would watch a video.
Next, Faqih’s question, why you ask the student to make reflection? According to Mr. Marsigit explaination about his reason. The best method was reflect. It was the highest order to thinking, because it’s very complete and complicated. He said that the reflection was belong to us, if you are sincere itself will increase of your english.
How to get meaningful learning was Wildanul’s question. Mr. Marsigit elaborated that to get meaningful learning, we did silaturahim, to traslate and to be translated, to reflect and to be reflected.
Then, go on to Dian puspita’s question, how to teach effectively?  Mr. Marsigit like how the student learn effectively, rather than to teach effectively.  “You to reflect, you need to act, you need to have  more and more reflection”,  said him. Mathematical translation was mite. The real one was how to facilitate in order to learn to reflect, and gave the student a chance.
Next was Marissa’s question, what is the main idea of the school mathematic? Based on Mr. Marsigit explanation, for the youngest student, the children, knowledge was activity. The definition of mathematics is activity. It consisted of four, activity to looking for the pattern, activity to solve problem, activity to investigate, and activity to communication. Smart people were polite, able to adjust within situsasi any great mathematician if talking to a child elementary’s mathematics would define as activity.
The last question was Shella’s, how to change the thinking of student if mathematic is difficult subject? Polite and courteous was a science, giving better facilities, miles accompanied it, will eventually have a positive effect if we were able to lead out well.

Reflection of 2nd lesson

The traditional way of teaching math vs innovative approachs
Education is like a light in the dark. It can light and show the right way when we do not know direction to reach our goal. By having education we can think and act rationally, get a lot of knowledge and experience which is very important to our life. And also it is capable to increase our capacity. If we really have a willingness to change, we are able to get some positive progress. Every  result that we  have obtained is comparable with our effort. In this step there is a learning process that can be a resolution for our future.
We must realize that every step that we take during learning process bring so many advantages. We learn not only school subjects but also how we interact each other. We are trying how to understand the subject, memorize the characteistic of each lesson, be patient in solving problem, and so on. The interaction between teacher and student is the main thing in learning process. Due to the flow of information distribution from theacher to student. There are several methods that used during learning process. But we can divide into two groups. Traditional learning and innovative learning.  Here I will elaborate traditional way of teaching math and innovative approach.
In the pre-technology education context, the teacher is the sender or the
source, the educational material is the information or message, and the student is the
receiver of the information. In terms of the delivery medium, the educator can deliver
the message via the “chalk-and- talk” method. The teacher is the center of any information. Student only receive information that is given by teacher. This is certainly less influential in improving student’s knowledge. As we know math is inexact science that always have exact solution. But there are so many way to find the solution. Here we need large of knowledge to solve the problem. In other words, traditional method let the teacher delivers the lecture content and the students listen to the lecture. Thus, the learning mode tends to be passive and the learners play little part in their learning process. It has been found in most universities by many teachers and students that the conventional lecture approach in classroom is of limited effectiveness in both teaching and learning. In such a lecture students assume a purely passive role and their concentration fades off after 15-20 minutes. This is why traditional method is not effective.

Innovative approach of learning mathemathics bring new atmosphere. It combine various media to learn math, besides just hearing teacher then solving some problem.  Usually innovative approach using multimedia during learning process. The combination of various digital media types such as text, audio, images, video, and web-based learning, into an integrated multy-sensory interactive application or presentation to convey information to audiences.
The teacher uses multimedia to modify the contents of the material. It will
help the teacher to represent  material in a more meaningful way, using different media
elements. These media elements can be converted into digital form, modified and
customized for the final presentation. So, the students are able to learn better since they use multiple sensory modalities, which would make them more motivated to pay more attention to the information presented and retain the information better.
From the above, wecan conclude that the role of student is more important than teachers. The concepts of  paperless and penless classroom are emerging as an alternative to the old teaching
learning method.

Class Reflection #1

On Monday, February 11th 2013, was the first english meeting in second semester.  At first lesson began by praying which was led by Mr. Marsigit. Then we spent most of time in that lesson by knowing each other through introduction. Mr. Marsigit told us about himself and his family. From his introduction, I knew  he is very expert in english. Besides that introduction, he told us many things. What will we learn on this semester, specially what we need in this english lesson.

In order to improve our english knowledge, Mr. Marsigit planned about the classical learning that content of pretest, reflection, and online course. Pretest helds everyday to perceive our development. It contained about grammar, structure, reading, vocabulary, verb, adverb, and so on. Reflection  is re-elaborate what happening in the class extensively. The last is online course, in this course we were must be able to analize and reflected articles from Mr. Marsigit’s blog. The best way to make a good reflection is understand th article in deepth. Then explain with your own words.  In the end of lesson, Mr. Marsigit said that it is better doing a mistake and doing something.

February 18th, 2013 was the second lesson. As usual lesson began by praying. In this lesson Mr. Marsigit talked about english for mathematics education. In his perception english is a language and language is life. In order learned effectively using life approach. The characteristic are movement, effort, writing, listening, talking, reading, etc. He also stressed us out to construct our own concept. He told us the phycological aspect  of learning english which was important for us, will, attitude, knowledge, skill, and experience. Will was our heart feeling, our motivation,  and our spirit. He said that the bigest motivation in our lesson is our believe to God. If we already had a will, we must act as a follow up from our willing which was called attitude. If we had good attitude we can get a lot of knowledge, skill, and experience.  In the case of our need to develop mathematics education, we need to develope our communication through english for mathematic education.  This is why we must communicate efectively and intensively.

Reflection of "Pembelajaran Matematika Seperti Apa yang Kita Harapkan di SD?"

From the article, I think an appropriate learning for elementary student is fun but systematic. I mean the students are permitted to create a creative problem solving based on their own imagination, but not out of rule which is given by teacher. Freudenthal said that math should give opportunity to student for “be guided” and “refind” math by doing it. So that, teachers must have knowledge of learning steps in order to get systematic delivery. The realistic steps of math learning are preparation, opening, learning proses, and closing.

The  first step is preparation, teacher prepares and understand the contextual issues in depth so that he can estimate the possibility strategies pursued by students to solve the problem. Then opening, teacher introduces learning strategies  through  problem in daily life. Then the students solve it by their own methods. After that is learning process, students solve problem in many ways, then present it on class individually or in group. Teacher perceive and guide students to get the best strategies. The last one is closing, this step content of learning conclusion and evaluation. From that elaboration we can conclude that, as a teacher, we must increase our capasity, indeed this is the way to give the best education in our country.
